CALI Lessons Help - Frequently Asked Questions

Please note that the CALI Lesson Help pages are currently undergoing revision. Generally the information provided below is accurate, but some links are broken.

This is a list of Frequently Asked Questions about CALI and the library of lessons.

Hot Topics

The 2002-03 CD doesn't work on Macintosh.

Due to an issue with long file names, the 2002-03 CD will not work properly on the Mac. Please run or download lessons from the website instead. The 2003-04 CD, available in July 2003 will work correctly on the Mac.

When I click the Windows icon for a lesson nothing happens or I see 3 lines of text.

When trying to run a Windows lesson either installed from the CDROM or directly off the CDROM you may see a message with 3 lines of text that includes the lesson title. This indicates that the CLZ file extension is not registered. Normally, when the browser sees a link with .CLZ (all the Windows icons are links of this type) it starts up the CALI Run program. The CALI Run program then starts the lesson using the correct programs. When the CLZ extension is not registered you will see this message.

This can happen when you install the CDROM and you have Netscape already running. The installer registers the CLZ file association then starts Netscape to view the lesson menus. Netscape isn't aware of the change so it doesn't start the lessons. Netscape should be stopped before doing the CDROM Run command.

Either reinstall or associate the CLZ file manually.

I cannot get CLZ file to work using Netscape 6.2.3

I tried Netscape 6.2.3 and was not able to get it to work. It appears that other file extensions also will not work as they did in previous versions of Netscape. I'm inclined to believe this is some sort of bug in Netscape, although I didn't find a FAQ note about it. For now, if you are willing to use IE, I suggest going that route. The 'CALI Lessons' desktop shortcut is currently just pointing to the starting HTML file. Example: "C:\CCALI\html\index.html" If double-clicking it starts Netscape with the HTML file, you'll either have to change the default handler for the .HTML extension to be IE or edit the CALI Lessons shortcut to include IE as the executable. This would mean starting the IE app and passing the starting HTML file as a parameter. Example: "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Iexplore C:\CCALI\HTML\Index.html" - 8/23/2002

Under Windows 2000 or XP, I'm getting a message about a corrupted or missing file for ToolBook lessons.

Lessons written in ToolBook will not work under Windows 2000 or XP unless the user's account has 'administrative' privileges or the user has privileges to write to the temporary directory.

This normally won't be an issue for users running lessons on their personal computers since they will usually be logged in with these privileges. However, lab PCs may be locked down for security purposes in which case the lessons won't work. A message about a corrupted or missing file will appear.

For now, here is a solution that allows users to run the lessons without administrative privileges. Thanks to Duane Mengo, Duquesne Univ. for finding this out.

11/13/2002

Error Message: “Initialization failed. Not enough memory or file is damaged.”

All you have to do is change the security permissions on the "Temp" folder located in the WINNT directory. The path is as follows: C:\WINNT\Temp. Give user accounts the read, read & execute, list folder contents, and write permission on the Temp folder located in the WINNT directory and all ToolBook lessons will work fine. The ToolBook program writes temporary files to the Temp folder, but users in Windows 2000/XP by default do not have any rights to this folder (that's why you get the error message about corrupt or missing files.)

10/28/2003

Error Message: “This network book cannot be opened. Either another user is using it, or you do not have the proper privileges for its network location. Try making the book read-only.”

Solution 1: Give the Users group the “write permission” for each folder containing the ToolBook lessons (i.e. ADM, ARB, BA, etc.)

Solution 2: You could give the Users group the “write permission” for the entire “CCALI” folder located in the C: drive. This will also solve the problem.

Solution 3: Search for all the *.TBK files in the CCALI folder and make them Read-Only.

Installing the CD gives "RPC Stub" error.

Problem: In trying to install the new CALI CD to hard drive, I get this error:

Error Number 0x80070725

Description: Incompatible version of the RPC stub.

Setup will now terminate.

Same thing happens if I try to install CALI Author on this one computer. Windows98, Norton AV but turned off.

Solution: This indicates there's an incorrect DLL installed on your system. The following link gives details: http://support.installshield.com/kb/view.asp?pcode=ALL&articleid=Q105810 - 08/06/2002

I get a message about CALI Author saying a file is missing or not registered or something to that effect.

Occurs with CDROM version 8 and 9. CALI Author needs to be installed if you wish to open the Windows version of a CALI Author lesson. You can install it by running the D:\SETUPCA\SETUP.EXE program on your CALI CD-ROM. Or just reinsert the CDROM and double-click the CALI Author icon.

The web version of a lesson gives me problems like not showing answers or 'JavaScript' errors.

Not all browsers support the advanced features used in the web versions of lessons. If you are using AOL and encountering script errors you should switch to Internet Explorer instead. Leave your AOL browser window open and double-click the Internet Explorer icon on your desktop. From that window, browse to the lesson and run it. If you are still unable to run a web version of a lesson, try installing CALI Author and run the Windows download version instead.

Clicking the CALI Library icon pops up an error message about being unable to 'find components' but Netscape opens and shows the page anyway.

The default setting for .HTM doesn't work right with some versions of Netscape. The solution is to Include the path to Netscape in the shortcut itself. For example, change the shortcut from "c:\ccali\html\index.htm" to "c:\program files\netscape\netscape.exe c:\ccali\html\index.htm"

"Missing Page" error running some lessons

We corrected 3 lessons with missing pages on the 10th edition. Contact CALI for a free update or download fixed versions from the website.

General Questions

How can I write my own lesson?

You need to get a copy of CALI's authoring system. We provide it on our CDROM and also as a downloadable package from our website.

How do I download a Flash lesson to my computer?

Downloading CALI Flash lessons to a computer isn't directly supported. Basically, you're supposed to run it while connected. But here are some ideas.

  1. First, get to the webpage which has the Flash lesson in it. After the lesson has finished loading there will be a copy of this movie somewhere in your web browser's cache.
  2. Now try the Save As option to save the web page with Flash to a folder of your choice. This didn't work for me but might for you. After saving, look for the newly saved HTML file and open it. In my case I got a blank screen, but if you see the Flash lesson you're all set.
  3. If that didn't work, there's one more thing to try which can be very tricky. These are instructions for Internet Explorer. Go to the Tools menu. Select Internet Options. Click the Settings button. Click the View Files button. You now have a view of all the downloaded files. Sort this list by Type. Look for 'Flash movie'. All the Flash movies will be grouped together. They have the file extension .SWF. The CALI lessons all have the catalog number as part of the file name. Example, Examination Skills is EXAM01 so look for EXAM01.SWF. Administrative Law lessons start with ADM. You can now click and drag the .SWF file to your desktop. Double-click the .SWF file on your desktop. If the lesson starts up, you're all set. Be sure to close the downloaded files folder and press Cancel to the dialog boxes.

Lesson features

What is the purpose of CALI lessons?

The exercises augment traditional law school instruction. Law faculty write the exercises and regularly review and revise them. The format of the individual exercises varies according to the authors' educational objectives. Some exercises use the setting of a simulated trial to let students test their understanding of an area of law. Other exercises drill students on the interpretation of cases and statutes. Still other exercises individualize the classroom tutorial experience by leading students through a series of questions, making them identify relevant issues and apply recently learned concepts.

How does scoring work?

Some exercises score the student's performance. Some exercises ask the same question more than once, expecting two or more alternative answers. In these exercises, you must give all the correct answers in order to earn a score of 100%. In many lessons you can get a score report by clicking the score icon. Print out scores.

How long are the lessons?

The CALI Catalog lists all the exercises and their approximate completion times. Some exercises allow users to quit in the middle of the exercise and resume that position when they return to the exercise later. Others let users start exercises on a question number of their choice. Still others users start anew each time.

Who may use the lessons?

Please refer to the license.

Finding Lessons and Materials

I'm a student. How do I download a lesson from your web site?

You need to obtain your school's student download password. You should contact the person at your school in charge of distributing this password. If you receive an invalid password message when trying to select a lesson, make sure you used the correct upper/lower case letters. Also, be sure the password you are using is the CALI password and not your personal password assigned for your own use at your school.

Is it possible to print out a list of the answers or questions to a CALI lesson?

CALI exercises are interactive and so offer no way to print out all the questions and answers for a particular exercise. The order in which the questions appear in an exercise, and whether certain questions appear at all, are decisions that the exercises make dynamically as students are proceeding through them. As a result, the exercises cannot define a static, linear list of questions. Even if the exercises could define a list, printing it out would defeat the interactivity of the exercises.

You can always use your web browser's print feature when running any of the web based lessons over the web to print out a question or answer.

Printing directly from a lesson is no longer supported. If you're using one of the DOS lessons (light text on blue background), try printing to a file instead. Use File-Print Setup. Then use Word to print the file. Otherwise you're stuck with doing screen capture. For any lesson you can press Alt-Print Screen, switch to Word and press Ctl-V. Do this for however many times you want then print the final collection of screen captures as if it were a document.

How can I print my score?

If it's a web based lesson you can click the score button. Then choose your web browser's Print option on the menubar, normally File-Print.

If it's a windows lesson or a DOS lesson (white text on blue background) your best best is to do a screen capture. To do this press Alt-PrtScrn. Hold the Alt key down while pressing the PrtScrn button. The PrtScrn button is located at the top, right of the keyboard, usually above the Insert key. This key sequence makes a copy of the lesson screen. Now switch to a word processor like Word and do a Paste (or Ctrl-V). Your lesson image appears in the document. You can now print out this page using your word processor's Print command.

Where are the guides for the Property Law Series?

For Property Law Series I, II and III the latest editions (2000-2001 and later) have the guides included in the lesson.

Where do I find the companion books for Civil Procedure and Insurance Law?

The CALI Catalog indicates that required preparation for several of the Civil Procedure exercises includes reading parts of the Roger C. Park and Douglas D. McFarland book called Computer-Aided Exercises on Civil Procedure (4th ed. 1995) (West Publishing Co.). The Catalog also indicates that required preparation for the Torts exercises called Intent One: The Use of Intent in Tort and Intent Two: Computer-Aided Intent Questions includes reading parts of the Robert E. Keeton book called Computer-Aided and Workbook Exercises on Insurance Law.

CALI provides one copy of these books to each member school. You can either use this book from your library or obtain your own copy from West Group.

Where are the Corporate Acquisitions, and Securities lessons?

These lessons are only available for Macintosh computers.

How do I download the entire library to place on lab computers?

This feature is no longer supported. Please use the CALI CDROM instead.

How can I review a lesson?

All faculty can get a free CALI CDROM. If you are at a member school, you should contact your school's CALI Representative. You can also download the lessons for free. You'll need to obtain a password from your school's download contact person. If you do not belong to a member school contact CALI directly at 612/627-4908 or cali@umn.edu.

How do I get my own CALI CDROM?

Faculty and staff members can obtain their own free CALI CDROMs by contacting CALI at 612/627-4908 or cali@umn.edu. Law students at member schools may purchase their own. The 1-800 number is no longer in service.

What distribution formats do you support?

CALI provides materials on a CDROM, as files available for download from the Internet or as lessons which can be run directly over the web.

May member schools install the CALI Library on the school's network?

Yes. See license for restrictions.

How can I access the lab-installed lessons via a web browser in the school's computer lab?

The CALI Library for 2001-2002 requires a web browser. Refer to the installation FAQ for more information.

What is the most recent distribution of the CALI Library?

The most recent distribution of the CALI Library is the 2001-2002 Library, released in July 2001, 11th edition.

How can I tell if I am running the most recent Library Distribution?

The CALI 2002-2003 CDROM (12th Edition)

CALI-Iolis

CALI-Iolis is no longer supported. Please use CALI Author instead.

Errors

"access to resource is disallowed" using NT Workstation and IE4.

If you receive a message that "access to resource is disallowed" when trying to open the CALI local htm files (i.e., html/index.htm) and you are using NT Workstation and IE4, you may need to change the policy setting to allow users access to the taskbar.

What do I do about a problem downloading lessons?

All the files that you download are installation programs. These programs will install the lesson files. There are two types of files that you download. The utility files and the lesson files. Once you have downloaded all the files to a folder you have chosen, you double-click each file's icon. That will start the installation for the particular utility or lesson.

Note: An alternative to downloading would be to run the lessons directly from the Web. Not all lessons are available this way. If you go to the lesson browser, you can choose those with the web icon.

MOST COMMON PROBLEM: I have downloaded a lesson but can't seem to open it now. When I click on it, a screen pops up that asks me what program I want to use to open the file with. None of the programs I have will open the file.

You probably use Internet Explorer or AOL. There's a bug which causes it to download the file name incorrectly. For it to work you must rename it to have an .EXE extension. Try this.

  1. Open 'My Computer' from the Desktop.

  2. Select the View menu -- Options (or Folder options) item.

  3. In the dialog box that pops up, select the View tab and make sure the 'Hide file extensions.' check box is Not checked.

  4. Say OK.

  5. Go to the lesson icon and rename it to end with .EXE. For example, the file 'P_PPL05' would become 'P_PPL05.EXE'. (We are adding the .EXE which Internet Explorer didn't.) Once you rename the file, its icon should change to a tiny red CALI.

  6. Now you can double-click it and it should run automatically. You will either be prompted to 'Press UnZip on the next screen' or walked through some installation screens. If you received the 'Unzip' prompt, just follow the directions, or just press 'Enter' on all the screens.

  7. Afterwards, run the MiniMenu and your lessons will appear in the list.

I use Download Accelerator (Plus) and I'm getting an error message

Users of Download Accelerator (Plus): Currently we don't provide support for DA. To download the CALI files, you must turn off DA.

I downloaded and ran all the files. Now it keeps saying something about 'UnZip' each time I try to run the lesson.

Sounds like you've successfully installed the lesson. The message you get is simply the installer informing you that you have installed. By double-clicking the file again, you are just installing over and over. Instead, you need to start the MiniMenu. Go to the Start button, and pick Programs then CALI. Choose the Library icon to start the MiniMenu. The MiniMenu lists all the lessons you downloaded.

I downloaded some lessons and get a message that 'mtb30run.exe' or 'tb30run.exe' are missing.

Did you download the Toolbook Utility files along with your lessons? If not, please do so. Click here to download: Toolbook Utility files. After downloading, run it by double-clicking the file. Then press Enter 3 times to accept the default settings.

Downloading a component never completes

While downloading a lesson file it just stops or 'aborts'. You may be experiencing a timeout imposed by your service provider.

I get a message when I click on the Next step button that it's 'invalid' or that my browser didn't send the expected FORM data.

These problems appear to only occur with folks using AOL as their service provider and version 3.0 of Microsoft Explorer. We have no solution for this problem.

Windows 95 asks me which program to open the downloaded file with.

This happens when you click to download the component from Internet Explorer and it says it's downloading an .EXE file but when it's finally saved, the file has some mysterious letters like .AQZ instead of .EXE. This prevents you from running the program. Change the letters after the period to be EXE and try running the file again. (e.g., change EVD02.AQX to be EVD02.EXE)

If you still have a problem please contact Sam (tech support) at calitech@cali.org or 612/627-4912. Include a description of the problem ("weird error message", "doesn't accept my submission", "connection aborts while downloading", etc.), your web browser name and version and your service provider (AOL, etc.). (e.g., 'It aborts while downloading the file. My browser is IE3.02 and I am using AOL.')

How can I tell if my Windows or Macintosh lab library installation is correct?

Consult the Installation page for Windows or Macintosh

Why do I get a 'Component missing' error message when running the SETUP program on my CDROM?

It appears to be a problem with old CDROM drivers being unable to read all the files from the CDROM. You may be able to run the main installer directly. To do this, find the SETUP program located in the SETUPLIB folder on the CDROM. Run this program.

What if CALI is not on the path?

As of 1999, the CALI folder is no longer required in the PATH statement.

  • The 2001-02 edition of the library allows you to run the lessons from CDROM.

  • The 2000-01 edition of the library allows you to run the lessons from CDROM.
  • The 1998-99 edition allows the lessons to run without setting a CALI environment variable. You should still have CCALI on the path to run some ToolBook lessons.

What causes DOS exercises to freeze up on first or second screen?

If _DEFAULT.PIF is not in c:\windows (i.e., if you've moved _DEFAULT.PIF to another directory), the DOS exercises will freeze up when run from the CALI Menu Program for Windows.

What do I do if I get a "License expired" message after selecting a lesson to run from "The CALI Law Student CD" on my home PC?

The lessons on the "CALI Law Student CD" prior to 1998-99 expire one year after installation. Due to licensing restrictions, CALI couldn't distribute a CDROM which could run indefinitely. You will need to order a newer CDROM or download lessons from the web site.

What do I do if my screen freezes and I see the error message, "Please wait."?

This error shouldn't occur in the latest library. If so, please let us know.

What's the deal with lesson WT07 (Rule Against Perpetuities) (aka PPL08)?

We changed the catalog number for WT07 to PPL08 to more accurately reflect its content. This happened before mastering the CDROM but after the printed Catalog was produced. It appears in the Catalog as WT07 but on the CD as PPL08. It appears on the January 99 CD but is not available for download. This lesson has been pulled due to licensing issues. We no longer distribute it.

Webolis

How do I run a Webolis lesson?

We are no longer using Webolis. Webolis has been supplanted by CALI Author. Webolis lessons have been converted into CALI Author. CALI Author then exports the lessons into HTML. These exported lessons can be run directly from our website. The web-based lessons it provided have now been incorporated into the regular library. You can access these by going to the library of lessons and choosing the Web icon.
