What is AutoPublish?

AutoPublish is a function within CALI-Author that lets faculty (or even students) create their own lessons, quizzes or study-aid. The lesson is published to the CALI website.

How does AutoPublish work?

AutoPublish works from within CALI-Author. You must be in "authoring mode" in the CALI author software in order to use AutoPublish. The author writes the lessons, saves them locally and then chooses FILE-->AUTOPUBLISH from the program's menu. This opens up a separate browser window (you must be connected to the Internet for AutoPublish to work) and you are prompted to login to the CALI website.

After logging in, the lesson is uploaded to the CALI website and you receive a unique URL for that lesson. You can put this URL on your course webpages (i.e. BlackBoard, TWEN or other courses websites) or email it to your students to allow them to link through to the AutoPublished lesson.

From the CALI website you will be able to track access to your lessons and if students use this link and save their scores, you will be able to view student scores either individually or in aggregate.

Is there a way to AutoPublish from a Mac or Linux PC?

Unfortunately, no. AutoPublish is a feature of CALI-Author which is written in Visual Basic and only runs on Microsoft Windows PCs.

How long will AutoPublished lessons stay on the website?

Lesson will stay on the website as long as faculty are using them. We won't look to clean up AutoPublished lessons until at least one year of inactivity has passed. At that point, we will attempt to contact the faculty member who authored the lesson and only then disable it (but not delete it).

Can anyone see my Autopublished lesson? Can I restrict access to my AutoPublished lesson so that only certain people can see it?

When you AutoPublish a lesson, you are given a unique URL to access that lesson. The only way to access the lesson is with that URL. You control who sees the lesson by deciding who to share the URL with. Be warned that CALI is not able to tell if your students share the link to the AutoPublished lesson with other students.

How do I delete/remove a previously AutoPublished lesson?

Right now there is no option for deleting or removing AutoPublished. This feature will be added shortly.  However, if you don't share the unique URL assigned to the AutoPublished lesson no one can see it.

Can I make changes to an existing CALI lessons and then AutoPublish it?

Yes. We request that you let us know via email if you are doing this. We need to make sure that proper attribution is applied to your and our materials. You can contact Deb Quentel (dquentel@cali.org) for the passwords needed to edit existing lessons.

Is CALI interested in buying AutoPublished lessons?

Perhaps. Please contact Deb Quentel (dquentel@cali.org) if you wish to discuss selling your lesson to CALI.

Which version of CALI Author should I be running to get the AutoPublish features ?

The AutoPublish features of CALI Author are available beginning with version 3.1.3, so you should run version 3.1.3 or higher to use AutoPublish.  You can download the latest version of CALI Author here. (login required)

When I use an image in my lesson more than once, AutoPublish asks me to upload it multiple times. Do I need to upload multiple copies?

No.  There is a bug in the system that doesn't properly account for using an image more than once in a Lesson.  So, if you use the same image in 4 different places in your Lesson, AutoPublish will provide 4 upload slots for it on the files upload page.  You do not need to upload it 4 times, once will do.  Just enter the path to the image in the first slot.  You may safely ignore the rest.

If I link my AutoPublish lesson through my course web page, can students access the lesson without logging onto the CALI site?

No.  All access to CALI lessons -- whether through a link generated using AutoPublish or created as a direct link from your TWEN / Lexis / Blackboard page to a CALI lesson -- requires the student to login to the CALI website.  Students must create their own personal account at CALI using your school's authorization code

Why do I get an error message about a missing book when starting the lesson?

When I start a lesson I see a screen that looks like this:

This error appears because Flash thinks it's not supposed to run files from your folder.
  • If you've just installed the library, please restart your web browser. This may be sufficient.
  • The installation program attempts to fix this but with some PC security settings it's unable to. In this case you'll need to manually add the CALI path.
    1. Go to this web page: Flash Global Security Settings
    2. Select the Edit Locations button on the Security Panel and add your CALI path via Add Location. This is usually just 'C:\CCALI'.
    3. Make sure the CALI path appears with a (green) checkmark next to it.
    4. Restart your browser or close all your browser windows.

How do I download a CALI lesson for use or to modify it?

You must be a registered user to download a lesson.

1.      Go to our website at www.cali.org;

2.      Login

3.      Click on “Lessons” (located on the left of the top nav bar);

4.      Click on “Lessons by Subject”

5.      You can search for the lesson (please enter the lesson’s title and/or author), or you can click on the subject and look for the lesson there. In this example, we will search for a "Contracts" lesson, so you must click on "Contracts" under the Subjects' list.

6.  You can scroll down and look at all the available lessons under "Contracts". Once you have chosen your lesson, you can either download the lesson or run the Flash version directly from the website. For downloading, click on the "Win/Download" link.

7.  On the next page (that  appears on your screen,) click on "Download" under the "Lesson Download" title.

8. A new window will open. Click on "Run". (If you have Windows Vista, you might have to click on "Run" a second time too).

9.  Click on "OK".

10. Click on "Unzip".

11. Click on "OK".

12.  Click on "Close".

13. Search for your lesson in "My Computer" (For example, C://CCALI/CONT/CON68/CON68.cbk). You can also open the file in CALI Author mode to modify it.  You will need additional passcodes to modify a lesson. Please email CALI for the passcode.
